The fans are turned on the computer detects that the temperature of the coolant goes above the certain level. Once the coolant s temperature returns below that certain point, the electric cooling fan turns off. Meanwhile, rear-wheel drive cars typically have engine-driven cooling fans. These fans are controlled by a viscous clutch located at the hub of the fan. The airflow comes through the radiator. This viscous clutch is akin to the viscous coupling that can also be seen in all-wheel drive vehicles.
